How it works

Understand the arrangement, not just its label.

This path means acquiring a crypto asset and later holding, transferring, or selling it. Any gain depends on the eventual sale value exceeding the full costs; the value can also fall substantially or become difficult to sell. Short-term trading adds execution, liquidity, and fee uncertainty. This page does not identify assets, timing, or trading methods.

Where uncertainty sits

  • 01

Prices can change rapidly, and past prices do not show what a future price will be.

  • 02

Trading costs, spreads, network fees, delays, and available liquidity can change the amount received.

  • 03

Custody, platform availability, cyber incidents, and scams can affect access separately from market price.

Research prompts

Questions to answer in your own records

  • What exact asset, network, and custody arrangement am I researching, and which primary records explain them?
  • What are the total entry, transfer, and exit costs, and what would a large price decline mean in dollars?
  • How would I verify a platform or address without relying on a promotional message or social post?

Pause and verify

Someone promises a guaranteed return, urges an immediate transfer, offers a secret signal, or says crypto must be sent to protect or unlock an account. FTC and CFTC guidance describe these as major fraud warning signs.
